OUIDAH VODUN JAZZ FESTIVAL
Fête du Vodoun (literally Vodoun Festival, also known as Traditional Religions Day) is a public holiday in Benin that celebrates the nation's history surrounding the West African religion of Vodoun. The celebration is held annually on January 10 throughout the country but most notably in the city of Ouidah. Beginning with the slaughter of a goat in honor of the spirits, the festival is filled with singing, dancing and the imbibing of liquor, especially gin. Vodoun was officially declared a religion in Benin in 1996 and the festival has attracted thousands of devotees and tourists to Ouidah to participate in the festivities ever since.
ADDRESS: Adjovi House, Qt. Tovê Street, Royal Palace of Ouidah
LOCATION: The Historic City of Ouidah, situated on the coast of the Republic of
Bénin (West Africa). The festival takes place in the Tové neighbourhood in front of
the sacred Kpassê forest
PREAMBLE: The Republic of Bénin and particularly Ouidah played a central role in
the enslavement of the local and neighbouring population during the 18th century.
During this barbaric period more than one million people who had been kidnapped
were marched in chains and shackles from the enslaver’s market to the nearby port
of Ouidah where they would board ships and were trafficked into enslavement in
unknown destinations across the Americas and the Caribbean.
Although the enslaved people left their nations behind their ancestors travelled with
them as did their artistic expression and their ancient cultural and spiritual heritage.
Thus, Vodun, a central cultural and spiritual practice, extended its reach across the
Atlantic. The word Vodun, meaning Spirit, also spelled as Vaudou, Vodon, Vodoun,
Voudou, Voodoo, comes from the Fon and Ewe Languages. Although the system
originated in Bénin it is practiced across the coastal regions of West Africa from
Ghana to Nigeria.
Against a backdrop of brutal repression in the newly ‘adopted’ nations, the practice
of Vodun was prohibited, the penalty was death or imprisonment, the rites, rituals,
songs and dances were nonetheless performed in secret by the enslaved population.
Over time Vodun merged with and in some cases infused the spiritual practices in
countries across the Atlantic including Brazil, Haiti, Caribbean, Cuba and Bolivia.
Hence, whether it is Candombé in Brazil, the Santéria in Cuba or Haitian Vodun
these are spiritual systems that were and embraced evolved in synergy with the
journey of African humankind across the globe.
PROJECT: The aim of the Ouidah Jazz Vodun Festival project is to link communities
across 3 continents (Africa, Europe and The Americas) by reconnecting people
through their shared culture, identity and history. Music and spirituality are the
catalysts that unify through immersion in traditional rites, rituals, songs and dances.
Arts and culture will be used to illustrate the centrality of Vodun to African diaspora
community, European visitors as well as the African public.
What connects the peoples who were taken away as a result of enslavement is
their respect for the invisible and our ancestors. Music and rhythms have
always been the link between the different worlds and a means of
communication between them and the deities of nature.
Togbé Adjos Gankpangnan
Like people and their spiritual practices, music also evolved, but the intrinsic rhythm
remained consistent. Jazz is one such example of this musical evolution. Although
Jazz, Blues and Reggae are internationally acclaimed and celebrated their roots in
the traditional rhythms of Vodun and sacred origins are less well known.
The project will re-establish and revive these links through the universal language of
music. Audiences will discover the richness of this musical, cultural, spiritual and
historical heritage that is Vodun. It will also facilitate engagement, the sharing of
musical traditions and skills between artists from different backgrounds and
collaboration.
The Festival will take place over 3 days and will include:
Live music – Jazz and Traditional
Exhibitions - Paintings, Sculpture and Photography
Dance
Workshops - Batik (Campala fabric, Wax) Music (discovery and practice
traditional instruments and rituals, with professional supervisors)
The festival will bring together contemporary artists and traditional musicians to
inspire, be inspired and immerse the audience in the culture and practices of the
centuries-old Vodun traditions steeped in the spirits of nature.
The Festival organisers are anchored in an innovative process of sharing and
creating a truly wondrous and participatory experience that accentuates the positive
and ancestor-related character Vodun.
The Festival will conclude with a series of tours to convents of the various deities,
meetings of dignitaries, including the King of Ouidah.

PREAMBLE
Benin, and more particularly Ouidah, was in the 18th century a high and dark starting point for slaves and a hotbed of the slave trade. These slaves, when they left the land of their ancestors, took with them all forms of artistic, cultural and religious expression belonging to their heritage: Vodun, which thus spread across the Atlantic. Although forbidden to slaves under pain of death or imprisonment, the Vodoun rites, rituals, songs and dances were performed in secret, and confronted, mingled with those practiced in the host countries: Brazil, Haiti, Caribbean , Cuba, Bolivia…. Whether it is Candombé in Brazil, Santeria in Cuba, Haitian Vodun, these are cults that have evolved according to human history (Slavery, Evangelization, etc.) but which are symptomatic of the known dynamics of Vodun. The Ouidah Jazz Vodun Festival project is to reconnect 3 major continents (Africa, Europe and America) through a common history. To link music and religion, traditions and instruments, culture and identity! To offer the African, Afro-descendant, European or other public all the art forms that surround the voodoo identity. According to Togbé Adjos Gankpangnan: “What connects the peoples who migrated as a result of slavery is their respect for the invisible and for their ancestors. Music and rhythms have always been the link between different worlds and a way to address the divinities of nature. So music has evolved like men and their religious practices, but the common rhythmic basis continues. Jazz is one of the examples of this musical evolution. Jazz, Blues, reggae and others are known the world over, but less is known about their deep roots from the traditional rhythms of sacred Vodun music. Our project is to reconstitute these links through the universal musical language, but also to make people discover the riches of this cultural, religious and historical heritage that is vodou. And finally to allow an artistic meeting between artists from various horizons.
ABSTRACT
The city of Ouidah Jazz Vodun Festival will offer you during these 3 days: Exhibitions of vodun works of art (Paintings, Sculptures, Photographs ...) as well as live performances. Workshops and discovery open to all (on registration and participation): Traditional vodun music: discovery and practice of traditional instruments and rituals, with professional supervisors, Dance, Learning batik (Campala fabric, wax). Concerts and musical performances by musical groups with a "root" tendency. The festival will bring contemporary artists to draw inspiration from centuries-old traditional practices. Will allow musicians of the Vodun tradition to anchor themselves in a process of sharing and creation during concerts and Workshops. Will offer people who do not know Vodou a light on its positive character and linked to ancestors, as well as to the spirits of nature. After the festival, Togbé Adjos Gankpangnan will offer you vodun tours: visits to convents of different deities, meeting with dignitaries, the King of Ouidah, possible initiations, discussions and insights into this endogenous religion which is often poorly known or even demonized.
GOAL
Through artistic exchanges, allow the development of a common creation from the roots of Vodun but also share the Beninese culture, discover the practice of certain Vodun rites and allow an artistic meeting between artists from various backgrounds.
EXPECTED RESULTS
At the end of this hike, the artistic creation will further enhance the ancestral cultural practices. Music and dance groups will be selected for masters class and a fusion album.
A photo exhibition and videos will testify to this atypical adventure.
The idea will then be to promote the work done and allow other artists to invest in it.

Come To Play
By Karim Okanla in Benin
Thousands of citizens of Benin and their guest from other parts of the world have celebrated the annual Voodoo Day in style.
The annual festival is held in tents with colourful flags representing different voodoo sects and is marked with prayers, libations and sacrifices.
About 60% of the country's 6.3 million people practice voodoo.
And thousands descended on the seaside city of Ouidah on Thursday to receive blessings from Daagbo Hounon Houna, the city's voodoo head.
The festival is a time when ordinary people from all over Benin get a rare chance to rub shoulders with kings and queens in expensive African attire.
Sacrifices
They are joined by travellers from as far afield as Haiti, the United States and Europe.
Priest performing voodoo
Libations and prayers are an important part of voodoo
Ouidah, a former slave port on the Atlantic Ocean, some 40 kilometres from Cotonou, Benin's capital city, is known by many as the birthplace of voodoo.
Even well educated Beninois such as Cyrille Sagbo, a Western-trained English teacher, believe in voodoo and attend the festival.
"Sacrificing a goat is a good way to receive the blessings of the ancestors and keep diseases away from the entire population of Benin, not just the voodoo followers," he told me.
The voodoo leader, wearing golden earrings and a black-and-white head scarf, crowned by a conical hat, sits next to his senior priestess, draped in a hand-woven attire.
People who practise the tradition believe that life derives from the natural forces of earth, water, fire and air.
Fanfare
On the beach, for entertainment, 10 horse riders turn the seaside into a race track, attracting many children.
Huge loudspeakers blast out Congolese music, drowning the sound from traditional drummers.
Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are prominently advertised.
The day also bears a special significance for followers of traditional religions in Benin.
At a time when economic conditions are harsh and Aids is killing millions, prayers and God's mercy are in great demand.
